Choosing the right martial arts academy is about far more than finding somewhere that teaches kicks and punches.

Parents want to know that their child will be safe, encouraged and challenged appropriately. Adults want expert tuition, a welcoming atmosphere and training that helps them become fitter, more confident and more capable. The aim of Tan’Gun Martial Arts Academy, is to help every student grow physically, mentally and personally.

Through structured Taekwondo and martial arts training, students develop confidence, discipline, fitness, focus and resilience, while becoming part of a supportive academy community.

Whether your child is taking their very first steps onto the mat or you are an adult looking for a new challenge, there is a place for you at Tan’Gun.

More Than Kicks and Punches

Taekwondo is an exciting and highly effective martial art, but the benefits reach far beyond physical technique.

Every class gives students the opportunity to learn new skills, overcome challenges and experience the satisfaction of making genuine progress.

  • Physical Fitness: Taekwondo provides a varied full-body workout that develops balance, coordination, flexibility, strength and stamina.

Children become more physically confident and aware of their bodies, while teenagers and adults improve their fitness through purposeful, engaging training.

  • Confidence: Confidence is not created by simply telling someone to believe in themselves.

It grows when a student attempts something difficult, keeps practising and eventually succeeds.

Learning a new technique, completing a grading or earning the next belt gives students visible proof of what they can achieve through consistent effort.

  • Focus and Discipline: Martial arts training teaches students to listen carefully, follow instructions and remain focused on the task in front of them.

Students learn that progress requires patience, repetition and commitment. These habits can support them at school, at work and in everyday life.

  • Resilience: Not every technique works the first time.

Students learn how to respond when something feels difficult, how to manage frustration and how to keep moving forward without giving up.

This ability to recover, adapt and try again is one of the most valuable lessons martial arts can teach.

  • Friendship and Belonging: Tan’Gun is a welcoming academy where students train alongside people who are working towards similar goals.

Friendships form naturally through shared challenges, partner work, gradings, events and regular training.

For many students, the academy becomes an important part of their weekly routine and their wider community.

Why the Name Tan’Gun?

Tan’Gun takes its name from Tangun, the legendary founder of Korea.

The name represents heritage, leadership, identity and strong foundations. These ideas remain central to the culture of the academy.

Tan’Gun combines the traditions and discipline of martial arts with a modern, positive and family-friendly approach to teaching.

Students are expected to train with effort and respect, but they are also supported, encouraged and recognised as individuals.

The objective is not simply to produce technically capable martial artists. It is to help students become more confident, responsible and resilient people.

What Makes Tan’Gun Martial Arts Academy Different?

There are many martial arts clubs available, but not every academy offers the same experience.

Tan’Gun has been serving families since 2006, providing structured martial arts programmes for young children, older children, teenagers and adults.

Age Specific Programmes

A three-year-old should not be taught in the same way as a ten-year-old or an adult.

Each Tan’Gun programme is designed around the physical, emotional and developmental needs of its age group.

  • Tigers, ages 3–4: Movement, listening, confidence and early martial arts foundations

  • Dragons, ages 5–8: Coordination, discipline, focus and fundamental Taekwondo skills

  • Ninjas, ages 9–11: Structured technical development, resilience and progression

  • Cadets, ages 12–16: Fitness, confidence, practical martial arts and personal responsibility

  • Adults, ages 17+: Taekwondo, fitness, self-development and progressive technical training

This programme structure helps every student learn at an appropriate pace while giving them a clear pathway through the academy.

Experienced Leadership

Tan’Gun is led by Master David Venkatachellum, a 7th Dan martial artist with decades of teaching and training experience.

The academy’s curriculum has been developed to give students strong technical foundations, meaningful progression and a broader understanding of martial arts.

Training can include patterns, pad work, controlled sparring, self-defence, partner exercises, fitness and board breaking, depending on the student’s age and level. Structured Progress

Students do not simply attend classes without knowing what they are working towards.

Tan’Gun uses a structured syllabus, regular assessments and clear grading pathways so that students and parents can understand the progress being made.

Belts are not handed out simply for turning up. Students are encouraged to earn their progression through preparation, attendance, effort and developing ability. Discipline Without Intimidation

Tan’Gun maintains high standards, but the academy is not a harsh or aggressive environment.

Classes are disciplined, organised and purposeful while remaining positive, encouraging and appropriate for each age group.

Students learn that discipline is not about fear. It is about self-control, responsibility, respect and doing their best even when nobody is forcing them. A Family-Friendly Academy

Parents are an important part of the Tan’Gun community. We understand that joining a martial arts academy is a decision for the whole family. Communication, organisation, safety and trust matter just as much as the quality of the lesson.

Our goal is to create an academy where parents feel confident in the training their children receive and where students look forward to attending. A Community with High Standards

Tan’Gun is proud to be rooted in the local community, with training at our full-time academy in Welling and additional Sunday classes in Eltham.

Students are encouraged to support one another, represent the academy positively and understand that martial arts carries responsibilities as well as achievements.

What Can Parents Expect?

When a child begins training at Tan’Gun, parents can expect:

  • A programme suited to their child’s age

  • Clear instruction and structured lessons

  • A strong focus on confidence and personal development

  • Appropriate discipline and behavioural expectations

  • A progressive martial arts syllabus

  • Regular opportunities for recognition and advancement

  • A welcoming community with high standards

Progress will look different for every child.

For one student, success may mean speaking with greater confidence. For another, it may be concentrating for an entire class, learning a new pattern or finding the courage to perform in front of others.

Those moments matter. They are often where the deepest transformation begins.

Is Tan’Gun Right for Beginners?

Yes.

Many students arrive with no previous martial arts experience. Some are naturally confident and energetic, while others are nervous, quiet or uncertain about joining in.

Our instructors help new students settle gradually, understand the class structure and begin learning at an appropriate level.

Nobody is expected to know everything when they walk through the door. The purpose of joining is to learn.
